An Immigrant Nation
Lawmakers tackle an issue that affects millions in the U.S.
Immigrants should be able to live in the United States. They are not criminals. They are just looking for work. Isn't America about freedom?

People all over the world should be able to come to the United States. I can see why they would want to come to our country. Here, there is equal opportunity for everyone.

Anyone who is here illegally has broken the law and should be punished for it. They should be sent home. There are lots of people who are waiting to come here legally, and it’s not fair to them.

We feel very strongly about the new immigration laws that lawmakers are trying to pass. If immigrants started this country, then why is the United States trying to kick them out or punish them now? We don't agree with the proposed law.
Manuel V. and Yoliana O., 12, IN
How are immigrants criminals? The only reason they come here is to have a better life. They are not making the country a bad place. They help by building houses and roads, among other things. The proposed bill doesn’t sound fair!

It is unfair that people have been coming into the United States illegally. They should have to go through the same process as everyone else. I hope the President can come up with a plan to put a stop to people coming here illegally.
Gil H., 10, TX
We should allow illegal immigrants to stay in the United States. They must have it really hard in their own countries. If I were in their shoes, I would try to make it to the United States, too.
